3 cut candidates on Broncos roster ahead of NFL training camp

The Denver Broncos are attempting to reload quickly following the end of the Russell Wilson era. That said, there are plenty of starting players with roles seemingly written in marker. However, several notable players could be teetering on the bubble.

Here's a look at three players that could be on the bench this August.

3 cut candidates on Broncos roster ahead of NFL training camp

Candidate 1: Phillip Dorsett, WR

Long-time NFL fans likely remember Dorsett as one of Tom Brady's targets during the final run of dominance during the New England Patriots quarterback's time with the team. Some might be shocked to learn he is still in the league.

The 31-year-old journeyman found his way into teams as quickly as he had found his way out. For instance, in 2021, he played for three teams in one season. As such, despite entering August on the team's roster, Dorsett could find himself on the outside looking in quickly.

Candidate 2: Zach Wilson, QB

Zach Wilson was a high-profile quarterback addition to the team this offseason. However, the former Jets quarterback appears to have already lost the starting job competition.

If the slide continues, the Broncos might be willing to throw another dart at free agency or a trade instead of having Wilson as the team's emergency quarterback.

Wilson went 12-21 in three years with the Jets, throwing for 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. At this point, he might be played out, and getting a new player with an unknown ceiling might be the best solution in Sean Payton's mind.

Candidate 3: Brandon Johnson, WR

Brandon Johnson's character is outstanding as a member of the team. Johnson took more time than any other player to sign jerseys and memorabilia following last year's demoralizing loss to the New York Jets.

However, his production on the field and already deep location on the depth chart puts him in danger of seeing an exit this offseason. Johnson earned 42 yards in 2022 and 284 yards in 2023.

There was an uptick in production, but it probably won't be enough to assure him of anything with the Broncos this summer.
