3 cut candidates on Chiefs roster ahead of NFL training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to pull off the first three-peat in NFL history. Many have argued that this year's unit is stronger than last year's squad. With such a high floor for the franchise this year, one might think that the team would be content to roll out the same roster, aside from their premier additions.

However, winning it all doesn't mean they can ignore the details on the roster. Here's a look at three cut candidates for the Chiefs in 2024.

3 cut candidates on Chiefs roster ahead of NFL training camp

Candidate 1 - Skyy Moore

Skyy Moore has a name that might have served as the perfect follow-up to Tyreek Hill in the speed category. However, in terms of production, his numbers haven't seen any jump, even in a rebuilding wide receiver room over the last two seasons. In both years, Moore has only put up around 250 yards.

As such, he might be in the crosshairs already with nothing to play. All it takes is one mistake to confirm to the Chiefs that Moore is likely to continue his established pattern this year. If that confirmation takes place, Moore is likely to become a camp casualty overnight.

Candidate 2 - Ian Book

The quarterback made it to the Senior Bowl when he was coming out of college. That, by itself, is an accomplishment. However, the quarterback hasn't managed to stick around anywhere for very long. Currently, the fourth-place quarterback on the roster already, per ESPN's depth chart, Book could see his exit soon.

He has played in just one game in his NFL career. In that contest, he went 0-1, earning just 135 passing yards, throwing zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Unless he pops in a big way this summer under limited interaction with Andy Reid, he could be looking for work by September.

Candidate 3 - Rashee Rice

Cutting Rashee Rice would be a headline grabber. However, it would only be moderately surprising considering the tsunami of legal trouble that Rice currently is in.

He is currently facing eight felony charges, per Pro Football Talk. If convicted, Rice could serve a minimum of a year for each charge. It would only take one or two convictions for the Chiefs to feel it necessary to cut their losses.

If Patrick Mahomes' team could find a trade candidate first, that would be ideal for the team. However, by the time he hypothetically would be out of prison, he might have lost his NFL-level talent.

As of now, it appears that he has a slot on the team, but if he could be taken out of the equation at any time during the season, the Chiefs might decide to cut their losses.
