3 potential landing spots for Melvin Gordon after Broncos release feat. Saints
The Denver Broncos officially released Melvin Gordon from their roster following their Week 11 loss against the Las Vegas Raiders. He has been serving as their starting running back since Javonte Williams was injured earlier in the 2022 NFL season, while sharing the workload with Latavius Murray and Chase Edmonds.
Melvin Gordon has been a solid contributor to the Broncos' offense over the last three years. He eclipsed 1,100 scrimmage yards in each of his first two years with the team, while also scoring ten touchdowns each season. He was on his way to another productive season prior to being released, recording 541 scrimmage yards in his first ten years.
The main reason for Melvin Gordon's release has reportedly been his excessive amount of fumbles during the 2022 NFL season. He has already fumbled five times this season, including one in Week 11 against the Raiders. His skillset and proven production will still likely make him an attractive option for teams in need of a dynamic running back, including these three potential landing spots.
#1 - Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams have been unable to find a reliable running back during the 2022 NFL season. Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson have both been disappointing. This has resulted in the Rams averaging just 76 rushing yards per game through their first ten games this year. Only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are averaging fewer rushing yards per game so far.
If the Rams were to sign Melvin Gordon, he would likely jump into their starting running back role immediately. The Rams have struggled to just a 3-7 record so far this year, so maybe Gordon could give them a much-needed spark.
#2 - New Orleans Saints
Alvin Kamara is facing a potential suspension at some point in the near future. It could happen during the 2022 NFL season, but may also be delayed until next year. It appears to be more a matter of when rather than if.
Signing Melvin Gordon makes a ton of sense for the New Orleans Saints. He could serve as a complimentary back to Kamara, while taking over the lead role if Kamara is, in fact, suspended at some point. Gordon has always been an excellent receiver out of the backfield, which has been a staple for Kamara within the Saints' offensive scheme.
#3 - Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens average the second-most rushing yards per game in the entire NFL. They focus on the running game as much as any other team, utilizing quarterback Lamar Jackson, as well as all of their running backs. The only issue has been the health of their backfield.
The Ravens have been without JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards for most of the 2022 NFL season due to injuries. Adding Melvin Gordon to their roster would give them some much-needed depth to their running back position while making the strength of their offensive approach even stronger.
