Aaron Rodgers trade: What would a compromise look like for Packers and Jets?

Aaron Rodgers has already said on live television that he'd like to play for the New York Jets in 2023 and has said goodbye to the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay wants to trade him, and the Jets desperately want to trade for him. What's the hold up?

Right now, neither team can agree to compensation. The Packers want a lot for their four-time MVP quarterback and the Jets believe they're asking far too much for a player that they don't even want anymore.

Even Rodgers' impulsive nature isn't what's causing the delay. He wants to go to New York, but the two teams cannot find common ground.

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio said:

"The Packers want more than a first-round pick as part of the base deal. They want protection in 2025, in the event Rodgers plays in 2024. And that’s more than the Jets believe they should surrender for a player the Packers no longer want."

Naturally, teams want to get value out of their players, especially those of Rodgers' caliber. However, it seems like Green Bay is trying to get too much.

They want a first-round pick and more, but the Jets probably aren't willing to pay that. Recently, quarterbacks have been traded for incredible hauls, but the situation with Rodgers is different.

He's not as young as Deshaun Watson and the Jets aren't sending anyone back to play quarterback like the Los Angeles Rams did in the Matthew Stafford trade.

There's going to have to be some sort of compromise, though either team could eventually crack since they both need this deal to happen.

That compromise would likely look something like the Jets giving the Packers a second-round pick and potentially a mid-level player or another mid-round pick.

It's certainly not all that steep to pay for a future Hall of Fame quarterback, but it's still not what Green Bay wants, hence their side of the compromise.

These two teams have a deal they both want and need to make. The player involved wants the deal to happen, so it's just going to come down to whichever GM flinches first or if the two can find some middle ground to agree to a trade.

It remains highly unlikely that the Jets will send a first-round pick and more for Aaron Rodgers, despite how badly they need him.

What did the Packers get for Brett Favre?

This is not the first time Green Bay has traded a future Hall of Famer and franchise icon to the New York Jets. Back in 2008, Favre returned from retirement, but Aaron Rodgers was in town.

They decided to ship him to New York, but it wasn't for an incredible haul. They only received a conditional fourth-round pick. That turned into a third-round pick because Favre played more than 50% of the snaps that season.

Clearly, the compensation for Favre wasn't impressive, but the Packers are still trying to get a lot out of the Jets.
