Analyzing rise of Shane Steichen as Colts eye Eagles OC for head coach job
Shane Steichen has become a popular name in the American football coaching world in recent years. He is the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, having previously worked with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Cleveland Browns.
Steichen has been a coach in the NFL for over a decade and has built a reputation as one of the most innovative and talented minds in the league.
The Sacramento-born Steichen grew up playing football. He was a quarterback in high school and went on to play college football at the University of Las Vegas. After his playing days were over, Steichen got into coaching and worked as an offensive assistant at the University of Louisville. He then worked his way up the coaching ranks, working in various capacities before landing in the NFL.
Steichen’s first NFL coaching job was as a defensive assistant for the then-San Diego Chargers in 2011. He spent two years in that role, learning from the coaches around him and developing his own style.
In 2013, the Cleveland Browns hired Steichen as an offensive quality control coach. He would, however, return to the San Diego Chargers in 2014 to take the role he had with the Browns.
He was promoted to quarterbacks coach for the Chargers in 2016 and held that position until 2019. Steichen was named the interim offensive coordinator after Ken Whisenhunt was fired. He was given the job permanently in 2020.
In his first season as the offensive coordinator, Steichen helped the Chargers offense rank in the top 10 in several key categories, including total yards, points scored, and yards per play. Steichen left his job with the Chargers in 2021 to join the Philadelphia Eagles. There, he built arguably the best offense in the league and played an important role in their run to the Super Bowl.
Shane Steichen's coaching ability
Steichen has a reputation for being creative, always finding new ways to attack defenses and putting his players in the best position to succeed. He is also known for his ability to develop and coach quarterbacks, helping them reach their full potential on the field.
In addition to his coaching abilities, Steichen is also known for his leadership skills. He has a strong presence on the sidelines and in the locker room, and is respected by both players and coaching colleagues. He has a calm and confident demeanor, which helps him keep his team focused and motivated during tough times.
The 37-year-old has served as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles for the past two seasons under the leadership of former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni. Under Steichen, the Eagles had the third-best offense (scoring and total) in the 2022 season.
According to reports, the Colts have earmarked Steichen as their new head coach and have notified other potential candidates that they are no longer in the running for the position. The appointment will take Steichen's coaching career to a whole new level, and he will be tasked with unlocking a Colts offense that was among the worst in the 2022 season.
