Bill Belichick to Cowboys? 3 reasons why Jerry Jones should not turn to Patriots legend in 2025

Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys and Bill Belichick's New England Patriots didn't have many opportunities to rub shoulders in the NFL. With both teams sitting in different conferences, the two teams rarely played. However, with Mike McCarthy's tenure looking less secure by the day, some have speculated about a potential Bill Belichick addition.

However, that would not be the best fit for several reasons. Here are three reasons why Belichick should not return to the NFL via the Cowboys in 2025.

#1 — Bill Belichick trending down in win-loss

The biggest reason why Belichick couldn't stay with the Patriots and didn't receive any head coaching offers is because of his record going back to 2021. If one were to describe a head coach as someone with one winning season since 2021 and a steady decline in wins and losses every year, it would be a tough sell. That is what Belichick has delivered since losing Tom Brady.

If nothing else, the Cowboys need a head coach with a track record of one down year. Belichick has had two consecutive down seasons. Belichick went 10-7 in 2021, 8-9 in 2022 and 4-13 in 2023.

#2 — Bill Belichick failed to develop last three quarterbacks

During his slide following the Tom Brady era, Belichick failed to rebound with three different quarterbacks. Cam Newton, Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones all didn't work out. While it wasn't always bad, no good results lasted. The Cowboys have enjoyed a standard of winning in the largest chunk of the season between September and December.

If Jerry Jones moves on from Prescott, he could need a coach to develop a quarterback. Belichick hasn't done so well arguably since Jimmy Garoppolo nearly a decade ago.

Even his best season after losing Brady would have been a disappointment for the Cowboys at 10-7.

#3 — Could create unnecessary power struggle between Bill Belichick and Jerry Jones

Bill Belichick has been building his teams himself over the last score of years. Joining the Dallas Cowboys would mean taking orders from Jerry Jones on who is players would be. For a head coach who has done Jones' job at a high level before, it might be too late to turn off that switch.

As such, it could set up a struggle between Jones and Belichick. Even if things go well in the short term, it might only take one or two moves perceived to be wrong by Belichick to spark something. Of course, such a development likely would be swept under the rug as much as possible, but it could cripple the team nonetheless.
