Brock Purdy’s injury update ill omen for 49ers with Super Bowl window just about open
Brock Purdy has seen all the success and experienced all the highs in his unlikely rookie season. The seventh-round pick took over the team in Week 13 and was undefeated until reaching the NFC championship game.
The 49ers fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 31-7 in the NFC title game, but not before Purdy suffered an unusual elbow injury. He was hit in the elbow by Eagles defensive end Hasson Reddick, who went for a sack and forced a fumble out of the quarterback's arm.
Purdy didn't return to the game until the second half when his backup, Josh Johnson, suffered an injury. Although he returned, Purdy's throwing was limited as he only attempted four total passes in the game.
According to multiple reports, it was revealed that Purdy suffered a torn UCL in his elbow . The recovery time required for the injury is around a year, but Purdy hasn't announced whether or not he will undergo surgery yet.
Orthopedic surgeon Mark Adickes spoke about the injury, suggesting that Purdy will need Tommy John surgery and it could derail his 2023 season.
Purdy had a remarkable rookie year. He was the last pick in the 2022 draft, earning the title, "Mr. Irrelevant."
He combined for a season record (including playoffs) of 7-1, winning two playoff games. He threw for over 1,900 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions while adding two rushing touchdowns.
Who will start for the San Francisco 49ers at quarterback in 2023?
The San Fransico 49ers are going to have to figure out who will take the first snap for them during the 2023 season.
They started the season starting second-year QB lance" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-is-sponsored="false">Trey Lance, who they traded three first-round picks for. He suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, leaving the team in veteran Jimmy Garoppolo's hands.
Garoppolo then suffered a season-ending foot injury which saw Purdy take over in Week 13.
Purdy looked like he was going to steal Lance's job, but with the setback of the elbow injury, it could put that in jeopardy.
Garoppolo is currently a free agent and could sign elsewhere or could sign for another year with the 49ers.
It's anybody's guess as to who will start the season at quarterback for the 49ers, but it will likely be whoever the healthiest option is.
