Cam Newton landing spots: 3 reasons why the Chicago Bears should sign the former NFL MVP
The Chicago Bears appear to have a young, rising star in signal-caller Justin Fields. According to Pro Football Reference, the former Buckeye increased his passing yards, quarterback rating, and completion percentage from his rookie season to his sophomore season.
In addition to his solid passing numbers, he rushed for a league-leading 1,143 yards in 2022 (among QBs). This is the second-most in NFL history for a single season (Lamar Jackson set the record in 2019 with 1,206).
However, he does have 28 fumbles in just two seasons in the Windy City. He has also been sacked 91 times in his first two seasons. Perhaps a veteran quarterback with a similar skillset could come in and help mentor him. Maybe a former MVP like Cam Newton could help turn Fields into a superstar. Here are three reasons why:
#1 - Cam Newton: The runner
Cam Newton could make a strong case because he is arguably the best running quarterback in NFL history. He holds the NFL record for most career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 75. He also holds the NFL record for most rushing attempts by a quarterback with 1,118. Simply put, Newton is one of the most electrifying runners and playmakers in NFL history.
#2 - Cam Newton's experience
After sitting out last season, Newton had played 11 career NFL seasons (2011-2021;10 with the Panthers, one with the Patriots). He is one of the greatest Carolina Panthers in their history. He helped lead them to their first-ever Super Bowl in 2015, en route to becoming the NFL MVP. The three-time Pro-Bowler was one of the premier quarterbacks during his 10 seasons in Carolina.
#3 - Cam Newton wants to help mentor Fields
On his YouTube channel this week, Newton named Justin Fields as one of the starting quarterbacks he'd like to backup.
This would be a really intriguing move considering both have similar abilities. Both stand at over 6-3 and weigh, at least, 225 lbs. Their size combined with their rushing abilities makes them two of the most unique quarterbacks in the NFL. If an 11-year veteran like Newton were to come in and help a rising yet raw quarterback in Fields, the Chicago Bears could certainly benefit.
Other reasons why the Chicago Bears should sign Cam Newton
The Chicago Bears also traded for No. 1 receiver DJ Moore earlier this offseason. Moore played three seasons with Newton in Carolina. Not only could Newton help Fields as a runner, but he could help him grow closer with his new top receiver.
It wouldn't be an expensive move for the Chicago Bears either. Remember, the veteran quarterback minimum is just over $1 million. Chicago could sign a cheap but experienced veteran who has a strong history in the league of making great plays with his legs. Justin Field could become one of the best quarterbacks in football with the help of a veteran like Cam Newton.
