Chicago Bears to sign Adam Thielen this offseason?
The Chicago Bears need an upgrade at several positions, including wide receiver. Adam Thielen, who will be one of the top receivers on the free agent market this offseason, would be an ideal signing for the struggling franchise.
Thielen was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings in a cost-cutting move. The Minnesota native, who signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2013, has spent his entire nine-year NFL career with the team.
Thielen has recorded at least 67 catches, 716 yards, and four touchdowns in six of the last seven years, including back-to-back seasons (2017 and 2018) of over 1,000 receiving yards. He was named to the Pro Bowl in both of those 1,000-yard seasons.
During the 2018 campaign, Thielen became the first player in NFL history to begin a season with eight consecutive 100+ receiving yard games. However, he later failed to break Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson's record of nine straight 100-yard receiving games.
Why the Chicago Bears should sign Adam Thielen
The Bears ranked last in the entire NFL in both receptions (223) and receiving yards (2,598). That was probably one of the reasons the team finished with just a 3-14 record.
Quarterback Justin Fields was fantastic as a runner last season, rushing for over 1,000 yards. However, Fields needs all the talented pass-catchers he can get in order to improve. Adding a proven receiver like Thielen would definitely help Fields' development.
Chicago recently acquired wide receiver D.J. Moore from the Carolina Panthers in a blockbuster trade that sent the Bears' No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft against Carolina.
With Moore, who racked up over 1,000 receiving yards in three consecutive years before last season, Thielen and a holdover like Darnell Moody, the Bears could have an exciting wide receiver corps to help Fields next season.
Plus, the Bears have a ton of cap space this offseason, meaning they can afford to sign Thielen, even if it's an expensive contract.
