Christian McCaffery clears the air on rumors of Brock Purdy faking injury during NFC title game

During the 2022-2023 NFC Championship game, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an early elbow injury that hindered his play for the rest of the game.

His injury was later revealed as a UCL tear, but the rookie quarterback still played in the game.

Backup quarterback Josh Johnson suffered a concussion filling in for Purdy, resulting in the Iowa alum re-entering, but was unable to throw for more than 10 yards.

Running back Christian McCaffrey spoke on YouTube about the injury Purdy suffered with Bussin With the Boys. He recalled that Purdy couldn't throw at all after Johnson suffered an injury, resulting in them going into panic mode.

McCaffrey said:

"It was pretty tough. He tore his UCL. I mean he legitimately couldn't throw. We still had hope. Josh came in and we tie it up. We're ready to roll and then when Josh went down it's like it's panic mode. But you never know, defense picks six, special teams touchdown. You don't know what's gonna happen but I don't know if they knew how hurt Brock was."

McCaffrey scoffed at the idea that Brock Purdy faked the injury.

"So just having Brock out there there was still the threat of like, oh, maybe maybe they shot him up and he's good to go like who knows right. And he threw a couple of screen passes but I mean that's a serious injury. For him to come back in the game and you know try to at least throw... Dawg. No, he didn't fake it."

Brock Purdy may not be ready to start the 2023 season. While a UCL repair is typically a six-month recovery process, he's had to postpone the surgery due to elbow inflammation.

After pushing back his elbow surgery until March, Brock Purdy's chances of returning to the 49ers by Week 1 are looking bleaker.

The 49ers may have to start Trey Lance heading into Week 1. He entered last season as the team's starter, but his stint was cut short when he fractured his ankle in Week 2.

As of right now, it seems like whoever is the healthier quarterback by then will be the starter heading into the season. If both of them are healthy enough to play, the 49ers will have good competition at quarterback and should feel comfortable with whoever they choose to ride with to start the season.
