Colts conclude HC hunt by hiring former Eagles OC Shane Steichen

The Indianapolis Colts have hired their new head coach. Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen won the job over interim Jeff Saturday and other candidates.

Steichen revolutionized the Eagles offense in 2022. He helped guide Jalen Hurts to an MVP-caliber season (he was runner-up to Patrick Mahomes) and called an excellent game in the Super Bowl as his offense gave the Kansas City Chiefs defense fits all game long.

The Colts fired Frank Reich after a 3-5-1 start. They named ESPN analyst Saturday their interim head coach and he proved to be very ineffective, winning just one game.

Reich landed with the Carolina Panthers, but the Colts were one of the last teams still without a head coach. Now that Steichen's season with the Eagles is over, they've officially named him their next head coach.

Steichen spent the last two seasons on Nick Sirianni's staff and helped make them one of the NFL's most dynamic offenses. He'll now hope to do the same with the Colts.

What's next for Shane Steichen and the Colts?

Shane Steichen heads to an Indianapolis Colts team that is in desperate need of a turnaround. Ever since Andrew Luck's shocking retirement in 2018, the Colts have struggled to find a quarterback.

They've tried Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan, all to no avail. That will be the number one priority for Steichen.

Fortunately, the Colts are drafting fourth and there will very likely be a quarterback available. It's unlikely that either Bryce Young or CJ Stroud will fall to fourth overall, but one of them could and that still leaves Will Levis or even Anthony Robinson available.

It is very unlikely that the Colts don't draft a quarterback for Steichen. They have the capital to do so, and pairing a rookie quarterback with a new head coach is usually a wise team-building plan.

There are still a lot of other questions about the Colts, but step one for Shane Steichen's rebuild has to be finding a quarterback.

It is ill-advised to do what they've been doing all this time in trading for veterans, too. Draft one and build a team with Steichen and that rookie passer.
