Darius Slay landing spots: Top 5 teams that should target veteran cornerback ft. Dallas Cowboys
Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay could be on the move this off-season. Reports this morning have shown that the team has given Slay permission to seek a trade as they're looking to lower his cap hit for the season.
The team is still hoping they can extend him to a new deal that would lower his cap hit for this season, but if the two are off on money, then he could be traded.
One year remains on Slay's three-year $50 million contract. He's due $17.5 million this season. Trading him before June 1 would save the team $4.85 million in cap space. Trading him past June 1 would save them $17.5 million in cap space.
Slay made the Pro Bowl the last two seasons as a member of the Eagles. He's a five-time Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro.
At age 32, he is a little bit older for a cornerback but he is still productive. Last season, he recorded 55 tackles, 14 pass break-ups, and three interceptions.
Here are five teams that could be interested in acquiring Slay.
Five teams that could target Darius Slay
1. Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys already have one playmaker at cornerback in Trevon Diggs. Pairing him up with Slay would give them one of the best CB duos in the NFL.
The team is reportedly interested in Jalen Ramsey and if they miss out on him, Slay could be a cheaper option.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have one lockdown cornerback in Tyson Campbell. The team released Shaquill Griffin this week as he didn't pan out as the team's number-one cornerback.
They freed up $13.1 million in cap space and could use that money on a real number-one cornerback in Slay.
3. Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears are a rebuilding team and have the most cap space this off-season. They are also the team that needs to upgrade their cornerback position. Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson are the starters, and Slay could mentor the two with his experience.
The Bears have the space and flexibility to extend Slay and could sign him to a three-four-year deal.
4. Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks are in the top 10 for cap space with $30 million in 2023. They had one of the worst defenses this past season and could use a play-making cornerback in Slay to boost their secondary.
Slay won't be responsible for covering number one receivers as Tariq Woolen had one of the best seasons last year in man coverage for cornerbacks. Adding Slay would help Woolen elevate his game to the next level and take some weight off of his shoulders.
5. New England Patriots
Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots could use a number-one cornerback. After losing J.C. Jackson to the Chargers in the last off-season, the Pats could lose Jonathan Jones this off-season.
The team elected not to use the franchise tag on him, making him an unrestricted free agent. The team currently has $31.8 million in cap space and could afford to acquire Slay.
