EXCLUSIVE: "Obviously, we didn’t score much on them” - Trevor Lawrence reveals Week 17 matchup vs. Texans has extra motivation after Week 5 loss
The streaking Jacksonville Jaguars will face their divisional rival, the Houston Texans, on Sunday at NRG Stadium, and they're looking to get even after their Week 5 loss.
The Jaguars (7-8) suffered a 13-6 home loss to the Texans on Oct. 9, falling to 2-3 on the season, as the Texans earned their first victory, improving to 1-3-1.
In the loss, Trevor Lawrence completed 25 passes out of 47 for 286 yards and threw two interceptions.
Ahead of their Week 17 matchup this week, Lawrence reflected on the first matchup and credited the Texans for being a good team.
“You look at the way we played the first game, especially watching the tape this week going back through it, it’s like some of that stuff is hard to watch," Lawrence said. "Offensively and personally didn’t play near my best, and we just left a lot out there.
"You learn a lot, and you see the growth and where we’re at now, individually where I’m at now and as an offense, the level we’re playing, it’s where you want to be."
Jacksonville has won three straight games and five of their last seven games, playing good football late in the season.
"You want to be playing well at the right time," Lawrence said. "You don’t want to go back and change any of it, because I think that’s helped get us to here. But obviously for me, definitely want to play better and give us a chance to win, obviously. That’s the goal every week from here on out. Every game is important."
Lawrence then praised the Texans (2-12-1):
"Really, just put together a great game plan (in the teams' first meeting). These guys, they play really hard. They’re a really good team, really good defense. They’re not giving up many points. They’re really good in the red zone. Obviously, we didn’t score much on them.”
Trevor Lawrence says the Jaguars are a different team than who they were during their Week 5 loss to the Houston Texans
Ahead of their matchup against the Texans, Lawrence spoke about how the Jaguars are a different team now than they were during the teams' Week 5 matchup. He repeated how he and the team have been playing much better and the chemistry is clicking at the right time.
“Definitely. It seems like a different offense, different team," Lawrence said. "Like I said, we’re just playing so much better right now, and I think that things like that take time. And you’ve seen the chemistry and everything kind of just come together at the right time, but also personally, I’m playing better.
"I think every position group is playing better than they were at that point in the season. We’ve gotten better, and that’s all you can ask for is every week to get a little bit better. And that’s what we’ve done. Another opportunity, like I said, to do it again this week.”
The Jaguars will look to get even better from their Week 5 loss to the Texans. Regardless of the outcome of the game, the AFC South title will come down to a Week 18 finale vs. the Tennessee Titans (7-9).
