How is Joe Burrow 3-0 up vs. Patrick Mahomes? Analyzing Bengals QB's hot-streak against Chiefs superstar
Sunday saw Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes face off for the third time. It was the third time Burrow's Cincinnati Bengals beat Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs.
Interestingly enough, Cincinnati have beaten the Chiefs on all three occasions in the same year, and each victory has been by three points. The first of those wins came on January 2, when the Bengals won 34-31 to clinch the AFC North title.
Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase had career games in their first victory over Kansas City. Chase recorded 11 receptions for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Burrow threw four touchdowns and 446 yards. Cincy's Evan McPherson hit a game-winning field goal as time expired.
Four weeks later, on January 30, the Bengals edged the Chiefs 27-24 in overtime in the AFC Championship to go to the Super Bowl.
It looked as if the Chiefs would advance to the Super Bowl as they had an early 21-3 lead in the second quarter. The Bengals scored 18 unanswered points to tie the game and got a few more field goals to win 27-24.
On Sunday, the Bengals defeated the Chiefs 21-24 again and improved to 8-4 in the season, while Kansas City dropped to 9-3.
With 3:20 left in the game, the Chiefs missed a game-tying field goal that would have made the score 27-27. Cincinnati took over and stopped the Chiefs from scoring for the rest of the game, ultimately winning the contest.
Patrick Mahomes has a Super Bowl victory, while Joe Burrow is still looking to win his first
While Burrow has Mahomes' number in head-to-head matchups, he's still looking for something that Mahomes has that he doesn't: a Lombardi Trophy.
The third-year quarterback made his first Super Bowl appearance last season against the Los Angeles Rams but came short.
Mahomes won Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs but has also lost in the Super Bowl.
Whenever the Bengals and the Chiefs play against one another, they bring the best out of each other, with the Bengals coming out on top. The two teams could meet again in the postseason, and Mahomes could get his first victory over Burrow, or the latter could extend his impressive win streak over Mahomes.
