"It's definitely crazy": When Patrick Mahomes thanked Kansas City for embracing him as one of their own
Patrick Mahomes is arguably the face of the NFL at the moment. Ever since he was drafted by Andy Reid’s side in the 2017 NFL draft at #10, Kansas City’s fortunes changed. Except for 2017, the Chiefs have made it to every AFC championship game till last season. This season, they stand atop the league with a 13-1 record by Week 15.
But back in 2019, Mahomes was just trying to settle in the city after shifting from Texas Tech University with his girlfriend, now wife, Brittany Mahomes. The couple received a warm reaction from the city as they embraced the rookie QB’s entrance to Kansas. So, when Patrick Mahomes got an opportunity on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" show in July 2019, he thanked the city.
“It's definitely crazy, but at the same time, you love it. Kansas City is such an amazing city and they've really embraced me coming there. I love being there. I love being a part of the community and part of that organization,” Patrick Mahomes said.
It was evident that the people of Kansas City were delighted to have Mahomes come to their team. One fan of the Chiefs’ kingdom from Kimmel’s audience expressed his happiness at Mahomes’ joining.
The young fan had a tattoo on his lower back: “Champ stamp” with Mahomes posing for a throw. Mahomes was moved by the gesture as he thanked the fan.
In 2019, the Chiefs were yet to reach the Super Bowl with Mahomes, after losing against the Patriots 37-31 in the 2018 AFC Championship Game at home. So, Mahomes acknowledged that he was yet to earn the title of champ but promised he would try to win a couple in the following years. The Chiefs eventually won three Super Bowls in just seven seasons.
They are looking to win this season as well to become the first NFL team to win three straight Super Bowls.
Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany look to settle in Kansas City for 20 years
Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes eventually bought their own house in Kansas in 2018. When the couple was filmed by Bleacher Report in 2019, they revealed that it was their first home.
“This is the first home that either of us has ever owned. Renting a house wasn’t for us. We wanted our own place,” Patrick said.
The couple used to live in a 1800 square foot penthouse, which was bought for $307,000. Mahomes later sold this property for $550,000 and shifted to a more spacious house, just a 20-minute drive away from Arrowhead Stadium. This property had a livable space of 4300 square feet with a sun porch, a terrace, a pool with a jacuzzi, and a 500-bottle wine room.
Patrick and Brittany later revealed that they were so enamored by the city that they wished to stay in Kansas for 20 more years.
