Jets legend Joe Namath makes feelings clear as Aaron Glenn signs as new head coach
The New York Jets have finally announced a replacement for former head coach Robert Saleh and Jets legend Joe Namath took to X to celebrate the announcement on Jan. 22. He tweeted:
“I’m hoping all @nyjets fans are as thrilled as my family and I are that Aaron Glenn is our new Head Coach. I wish the season would start next week!”
Namath helped the Jets win Super Bowl III in 1969. He was also named the NFL Rookie of the Year in 1965.
Aaron Glenn spent four seasons with the Detroit Lions as their defensive coordinator (2021–2024) before transitioning into his first head coaching role. He previously coached with the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints.
The announcement completes a full circle for Glenn, who played eight seasons as a cornerback for the Jets from 1994 to 2001. He was considered one of the best during his time, even making the Pro Bowl three times, twice while playing for the Jets.
Aaron Glenn can help NY Jets address pressing defense issues
Glenn’s selection will help the Jets address their pressing defensive issues. They conceded 404 points this season, averaging 23.8 points per game, and ranked 24th in the league. The team was also ranked 24th in total yards allowed, 21st in passing yards, and 22nd in rushing yards. Additionally, they recorded only 35 sacks, placing them 25th in the NFL.
On the other hand, the Detroit Lions finished their regular season with a 15-2 record. Although the Lions' defense didn’t perform too well on many parameters like yards allowed and sacks, they performed well where it mattered most. The Lions only conceded 342 points, averaging 20.1 points per game (seventh in the league).
Glenn's selection also brought warm messages from NFL analyst Kevin Clark, who made a striking comparison between him and HC Dan Campbell. He tweeted,
“From my limited time with him, I think Aaron Glenn has the best chance to be the next Dan Campbell of anyone in the coaching market.”
Glenn will now have to shoulder the burden of a broken Jets team that had a 5-12 record this season. However, they have new hope with Aaron Glenn as they now hunt for a new GM.
