Most rushing yards in a game by a team: Panthers chasing history

The Carolina Panthers are currently having themselves a great game on the ground versus the Detroit Lions in Week 16. Thus far, the team has well over 260 yards rushing in their matchup versus the Lions. Running backs D'Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard each have over 100 yards rushing. Quarterback Sam Darnold contributed over 20 yards on the ground in the game for the Panthers.

Should the Panthers continue to pound the ball, they could easily find themselves in the history books. Only four teams have rushed for over 400 yards in a game in league history. Let's take a look at the top three teams who eclipsed 400 yards rushing in a game.

New York Giants - 423 yards vs. Baltimore Colts

In Week 10 of the 1950 - 1951 season, the New York Giants had a field day running the ball versus the Baltimore Colts. The Giants had a total of 423 yards in their 55 - 20 victory over the Colts. Fullback Eddie Price led the Giants' rushing attack with 145 yards on 14 carries. On top of the 453 total rushing yards, the Giants had six touchdowns on the ground as well.

Cincinnati Bengals - 407 yards vs. Denver Broncos

Cincinnati Bengals running back Corey Dillion had a career day back in Week Eight of the 2000 - 2001 season. Dillion rushed for 278 yards and two touchdowns as the Bengals rushed for a total of 407 yards versus the Broncos. Dillion's 278 yards rushing is the fourth-highest mark in NFL history.

Chicago Bears - 403 yards vs. Green Bay Packers

The Chicago Bears had themselves a day against the rival Green Bay Packers in Week Seven of the 1955 - 1956 season. In their 52 - 31 victory, the Bears rushed for 403 yards at Wrigley Field. Fullback Rick Casares and running back Bobby Watkins each had 115 yards.

Could the Carolina Panthers add themselves to this list? We'll have to watch and see.
