3x Super Bowl champ Duron Harmon eyes Patriots for farewell amid free agency frenzy
Duron Harmon was drafted by the Patriots in 2013 and had a successful tenure there until 2019. He won three Super Bowls, becoming an integral part of the championship-winning teams. He was nicknamed "The Closer" because of his ability to make game-changing plays like interceptions late in the game.
But since leaving New England, he has been a bit of a nomad, never staying with any team for more than a year. Currently a free agent, he spent last year with the Cleveland Browns and acknowledges that he is now at the stage of his career where he is waiting for a call to be a depth option. As reported by Mass Live, Duron Harmon said,
“I think last year just kind of let me know where, you know, what my status in the NFL is. If somebody gets hurt we’ll give you a call or … maybe another opportunity comes up early, I’m not sure, but right now I am, you know, still training to play.”
When asked about whether he would like to spend what he sees as his last year with the Patriots, he concurred and called it a "perfect end". He was also excited about the new era that New England is entering and thinks the franchise has the right people to be successful again. Duron Harmon continued,
“Oh, without a doubt, that would be the perfect end to this, to this story. I would, I would love to be, you know, a part of something from the beginning … because they’re trying to build something, right? And I know they have the right people to do it... So if the opportunity came, I mean, that would be special. That would be a really special way to end my career (with the Patriots).”
Duron Harmon might suit up for Patriots but not just anybody else
It was also clear that Duron Harmon is not in a rush to sign with just another team if he does not feel it is right for him. He said that the financial merits of playing in the NFL have left him with the leeway to take a considered approach, saying,
“Football has been amazing to me to be able to give me some financial freedom to be able to, you know ... pay for the next phase of life. So, if an opportunity comes up ... I just wanna make sure it’s the right opportunity because I’m preparing for this to be my last season.”
The Closer is looking for the ideal closure to his NFL career and the Patriots would be the perfect destination.
