49ers accused of leaking Brock Purdy's $60,000,000 contract demands amid QB's 2024 slump, by Colin Cowherd
Colin Cowherd had a bold take on the news coming out that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is demanding a contract this offseason in the range of $60 million per year. The player is still on his rookie contract and is slated for a deal this offseason. The value that he is reportedly demanding will make him the best-paid player in league history, matching what the Cowboys are paying Dak Prescott.
Since the season is not over, Colin Cowherd thinks the 49ers leaked the story to tamp down Brock Purdy's expectations. He said,
“There was a story, and it came out today, and it’s almost as if San Francisco leaked it, that he’s not going to take a Baker (Mayfield) deal, he’s not going to take a (Sam) Darnold deal, that he wants in the $50 million range. When I saw the story coming out … my take was, why is that story coming out now?”
Colin Cowherd follows up on Tom Pelissero's reporting on Brock Purdy's contract demands from the 49ers
Colin Cowherd's comments came after NFL Insider Tom Pelissero said that Brock Purdy will demand a top-of-the-market contract but he is not sure if the 49ers will be willing to enter a standoff with him. He commented,
"Next year is a contract year. If a deal is going to get done, I would anticipate it is at the top of the quarterback market for all the reasons I just said. That's Dak's number. That is $60 million per year. Are the 49ers willing to go to that, or are they going to be in a situation where you could have a standoff with your starting quarterback into the offseason?"
Pelissero also highlighted Lamar Jackson's case when the reigning MVP saw out his contract instead of taking a sub-standard deal, noting,
"There's no reason for Purdy to take a sub-market deal at this stage. He could always play out his contract. Lamar Jackson did that once upon a time... Brock also hasn't made as much money as Lamar by virtue of being a seventh-round draft pick, but I don't think this is, 'Hey, we're going to make you the 10th-highest-paid quarterback,' and Purdy is saying, 'Where do I sign?'"
The NFL Insider concluded that Brock Purdy thinks that he deserves what he is demanding based on his record so far, adding,
"Based upon his production, based on the playoff success. I'm sure he feels like he deserves to be paid at the top of the market."
The 49ers quarterback has led the team to two NFC Championship appearances and made one trip to the Super Bowl. This season will likely conclude without them making it past the regular season.
