“Quick to trigger” – 49ers’ Deebo Samuel dishes gameplan to beat Eagles defense
The San Francisco 49ers got their chances of a Super Bowl taken away this season when the Philadelphia Eagles beat them 31-7 in the NFC Championship game.
They were unlucky in the game as they suffered injuries to both active quarterbacks, Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson, in the game.
Following the loss, 49ers star wide receiver Deebo Samuel joined ESPN's First Take to discuss the team's defeat. He said that the team planned on exposing their secondary by making them bite on certain routes.
Samuel said:
"We were going to attack their DBs, all game long. They're quick to trigger on certain stuff that they see on film so we had stuff out of what we knew they'll bite off. They see the stem of a route and try to guess it."
The 49ers were unable to implement their gameplan towards the Eagles secondary as they didn't have a quarterback who could throw in the game in the second half.
Samuel added:
“In the nicest way, we didn't really get a chance to see how good the Eagles defense was if that makes sense. We had them schemed up, we had them dialed up… You know what a coincidence we didn’t have a quarterback.”
San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy to have surgery on torn UCL
The San Francisco 49ers entered the NFC Championship with Brock Purdy as their starting quarterback. Filling in for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, he finished the regular season with a 5-0 record and won his first two playoff games.
In the first quarter of the NFC Championship game, he suffered an elbow injury that limited his throwing for the rest of the game, which was later revealed as a tear in his UCL.
Days after the game, Purdy was unsure whether he would have a procedure done on his elbow this off-season.
This week, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Purdy will meet with Dr Keith Meister on February 21 to have surgery on his elbow.
Purdy is expected to make a full recovery and will hopefully be ready to return for training camp. The 49ers will be unsure who will enter the 2023 season as the starting quarterback.
