49ers HC Kyle Shanahan provides major update on potential Baker Mayfield signing: "We look into everything"
Former first-overall pick Baker Mayfield was released by the Carolina Panthers last night. Mayfield fell down the depth chart for the Panthers after a poor start to the season and requested the franchise to release him.
The franchise honored his decision and parted ways with him. Mayfield is on the waivers list, and multiple teams are rumored to be interested in acquiring him.
The San Francisco 49ers were brought up in the discussion for Baker Mayfield, as Jimmy Garoppolo was ruled out for the season due to a foot injury. 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan also gave his views on the Mayfield situation.
Here's what Kyle Shanahan said about the idea of bringing Mayfield in:
“We look into everything but that would surprise me right now”
The San Francisco 49ers are ranked 24th on the waivers list. There is a strong possibility that a team will pick Baker Mayfield before the 49ers get the opportunity to do so.
Teams like the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles Rams could get the former Browns quarterback. The Saints haven't performed well with Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton as their quarterbacks, while the Rams recently placed Matthew Stafford on the IR.
It will be interesting to see where Mayfield lands next but had he gotten to the 49ers, it would have been an ideal situation for both parties.
Baker Mayfield would love to play for the 49ers
The last two seasons have been very tough for Baker Mayfield. From being seen as the franchise quarterback of the Cleveland Browns to getting bounced around the league, Mayfield has seen it all.
He was traded to the Panthers this offseason and has been poor this season. Mayfield has a passer rating of 74.4 with 1,313 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions in seven games this season.
He would love to play for the 49ers as Kyle Shanahan is the type of coach who could bring the best out of him. Mayfield will be a free agent after this season and if he were to perform well with the 49ers, his market value would certainly rise.
As of now, it seems like the 49ers will have to continue with Brock Purdy as their quarterback. The chances of getting Mayfield aseem slim, but they're definitely not zero. The 49ers are currently 8-4 and are a Super Bowl contender this season.
