Aaron Rodgers sets the record straight on Woody Johnson’s call about Robert Saleh
Adam Schefter revealed that Aaron Rodgers had spoken with New York Jets owner, Woody Johnson, on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, Robert Saleh got sacked as the Jets' head coach.
Even though the NFL Senior Insider clearly stated in his X (formerly Twitter) post that Rodgers had no role in Saleh's firing, and that he gave no input during that call, people were quick to jump to conclusions.
Aaron Rodgers made an uncharacteristic Wednesday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show and cleared the air about the call with Johnson.
"Yeah, I did talk to Woody. Woody called me on Monday night. We had a short conversation. I appreciated the call. It was a genuine call, and he just asked me how it was doing. I got rolled up on the game and ankle got pretty banged up. So he just called and was asking how doing and, you know, we talked about the game and how disappointed I was in my performance."
Rodgers clearly stated that it was just a call to check up on the injury he had sustained after the Sunday game in London against the Minnesota Vikings.
Would Johnson have told Rodgers that he was planning on firing Saleh the next day? He cleared the air:
"Woody has no obligation to let me know of what his plans are, whether or not he knew what he was doing in that moment is inconsequential," Rodgers told Pat McAfee.
Aaron Rodgers shuts down allegations that he had a role to play in Saleh's firing
The 4x NFL MVP also denied any allegations that he had a direct or indirect role in the Jets HC's firing. On the show, he told McAfee:
"As far as any of the ridiculous allegations out there, I’m not going to spend more than one sentence in response to it, and that is I resent any of those accusations because they’re patently false," he said.
Aaron Rodgers said that he was surprised at how many people thought that a player had enough pull in the Jets building to cause the ownership to fire the head coach of the team.
"It’s interesting the amount of power people think I have, which I don’t. But I love Robert, and it was one of those days yesterday."
The Jets are set to take on the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football for the first time with Aaron Rodgers and without Robert Saleh. Can the new interim HC, Jeff Ulbrich, manage to improve the Jets' record to 3-3?
