“Do you want me to sell you a 20-year-old Mazda?” – Amazon’s Al Michaels names the ‘horrifically bad’ NFL game he called this season
Al Michaels is one of the longest-tenured sports broadcasters and has called many notable games in his 37-year career.
One of the worst games of the 2022 NFL season occurred in Week 4 between the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos, and Michaels was in the booth to call it.
The final score was a 12-9 overtime victory for the Colts. The game had no touchdowns scored in it.
Al Michaels told The Athletic that the Broncos-Colts game was dreadful and that he thought it was almost good because of how bad it was.
Michaels said:
"I think I’m to the point in my life and career, having watched sports since I was 6 years old, I feel what the crowd feels. The Denver-Indianapolis game (in) Week 4 was a dreadful game. No other way to describe it. No touchdowns. In fact, at one point during the game, I said to (analyst) Kirk (Herbstreit), “Is it possible this game could be so bad that it’s actually good?” He’d never heard that from a partner and went, “No!” - The Athletic
He was asked if he heard anything from Amazon management about the game
The commentator said:
"From the Amazon people, nothing but support. I think they understood what this was. We’re making the most of it. I mean, you just can’t oversell something. Do you want me to sell you a 20-year-old Mazda? That’s what you’re asking me to do. I can’t sell you a used car. … I’ve kind of gone down that road a little bit in games that have been bad in the past. But this game was horrifically bad. What were you supposed to do at that point? And away I went." - The Athletic
Al Michaels is excited to call the Jaguars-Chargers game Saturday
While Michaels called one of, if not the worst, games of the season in Week 4 between the Colts and Broncos, he will get to call one of the most exciting playoff games this weekend.
He will be in the booth calling the Jaguars-Chargers game Saturday night.
The commentator is excited to call the game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Los Angeles Chargers and also thinks it'll be one of the best games this weekend.
Michaels said:
"When I saw the possibility of this game winding up on NBC, I was excited about it because we had Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago against the Jets. … I found them to be a very entertaining team and they certainly were down the stretch. Living in Los Angeles, obviously, I know a lot about the Chargers and have had a number of their games through the years. … I’m looking at this game and thinking this is one of the spotlight games of this weekend."
The Seahawks and 49ers will play before the Jags-Chargers on Saturday night, with three games played on Sunday and one more wildcard game on Monday night to conclude the first round.
