Amon-Ra St. Brown details alleged frustration of getting drafted by Lions in 2021 - "It was terrible"
Amon-Ra St. Brown has been one of the main contributors toward the Detroit Lions' renaissance. As a sophomore, he broke out with his first 1,000-yard campaign and Pro Bowl.
Then there was 2023. He hit 1,000 yards again and made the Pro Bowl, but he also scored double-digit touchdowns, was named an All-Pro and helped the Lions reach their first conference title game since the days of Barry Sanders.
However, as it turns out, St. Brown needed some heavy convincing to agree to don Honolulu blue. Speaking on "The Pivot Podcast" on Tuesday, the wide receiver said he initially didn't like going to Detroit (starts at 10:47):
"I saw the 313, I said, ‘It's over with. I don't know what I'm going to do.' It's going to be in the middle of nowhere. Team isn't good. I probably know two players on the roster. It was terrible, and me going fourth round - it was all bad."
Amon-Ra St. Brown discusses appearance on Netflix's Receiver
In the same podcast appearance, Amon-Ra St. Brown discussed his reason for agreeing to appear on the Netflix docuseries Receiver.
After the success of Quarterback, Omaha Productions and 2PM Productions shifted their focus to pass-catchers. When the project became widely known, the Detroit Lion was enthusiastic.
However, he needed to talk to his father as well as his head coach, Dan Campbell, to get a role:
"They said the Lions want me to talk to Coach Campbell before we do it because the cameras are going to be around. I said, 'Okay, I'll talk to coach,' and before (that), I talked to my dad. He said, 'Oh yeah, do that s—t.' So I went to Coach Campbell, to his office. He's like, 'Yeah, you can do it. I just don't want it to be a distraction.'"
Once he got approval, he also got assurances from the filming crew:
"And so Netflix said they would only show up to one practice a week, which they did. They were never in the meeting room once."
Receiver, which also stars Amon-Ra St. Brown's divisional rival, Justin Jefferson, will release on July 10.
