Analysts recall Tom Brady's motivation to play for cancer-battling mom fueling Super Bowl LI win in Vice TV Documentary - "They're in trouble"

Vice released their new documentary, "Brady vs. Belichick: The Verdict", and it features an illuminating conversation on Super Bowl LI. Veteran writers and analysts like Gary Myers and Greg Bedard talk about that incredible comeback by the Patriots against the Falcons in that championship game and how it has become the stuff of the legends.

This series' first episode features people making the case why Tom Brady deserves more credit for the Patriots dynasty over Bill Belichick. Gary Myers talks about the GOAT quarterback's clutch ability and the duress he was playing under. He reveals that the star's mother was battling cancer before Super Bowl LI and seeing her there in the stands would have meant a lot. Myers says,

"Tom Brady goes into that Super Bowl against Atlanta, has incredible personal motivation to win that game because he found out a couple days before the game his mom, she was battling cancer but had gotten the doctors okay to travel from their home in Northern California to Houston. And I just know how much that meant to Tom, to have her there."

On the other side, Greg Bedard talks about the entire game and says that New England and their quarterback looked like an old team when trailing. However, he says that he knew the moment the Falcons chose to pass when ahead and Matt Ryan got sacked to give the Patriots the ball that Tom Brady was coming. Calling it stunning, Bedard says in the documentary,

"Sometimes Tom and the Patriots have struggled to come out of the blocks, and that game was probably worse than any of them... They looked like an old team. They looked like they were old and fading... When they (Falcons) decided to drop back to pass, I said to myself, they're in trouble. Tom's coming... He just pulled everything up out of the morass and just stunned everyone."

Super Bowl LI cements Tom Brady's legacy as GOAT, say analysts in 'The Verdict'

"Brady vs. Belichick: The Verdict" has three episodes, with the first making the case for Tom Brady as the most important person in the Patriots dynasty. The second will advocate for Bill Belichick, before the finale on February 4, 2025, which will see Mad Dog Russo giving his verdict.

This first part delves into the quarterback's leadership, clutch ability, intensity, football IQ, and longevity. The discussion around Super Bowl LI tracks the second quality. As Duke Castiglione says,

"I can replace a coach. I can’t replace the greatest quarterback of all time."

The Patriots are finding that to be true even now as they embark on a journey with their third head coach in three seasons.
