Andy Reid initially dismissed idea of scouting Patrick Mahomes, reveals Chiefs GM Brett Veach - "Dude, cut it out"
Brett Veach is considered the architect of the Kansas City Chiefs' current dynasty. After all, he was the man who drafted Patrick Mahomes #10 overall in 2017. That decision has paid off excellently, to the tune of three Lombardi trophies and five MVP awards for the quarterback — two in the regular season and three in the Super Bowl.
However, according to the general manager, head coach Andy Reid initially did not want to see Patrick Mahomes' tape.
"I sent him maybe four to six clips of him in his most recent game," Brett Veach said on a special episode of Rich Eisen's eponymous show. "And mind you, Coach is prepping for a game week. And Pat Mahomes, he doesn't even know, not on his radar. And he shot me a text back, 'Dude, cut it out.' Like, 'We'll talk about this after the season.'"
Reid eventually acquiesced and realized that he had found his man.
"Then after the season, once Coach started to digest the film, he fell in love. I mean, everyone did. And then we brought him into the facility - and Coach is known to have like his quarterback academy where he brings them in and we bring draft prospects in and they spend two, three hours and most of the time it's not bad because it's a lot of stuff," Veach continued.
"And when he came out of that meeting in his pre draft interview, Coach was like, 'This kid nailed this thing.'"

In the same podcast appearance, Brett Veach reflected on nabbing record-breaking wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the 2024 Draft.
As the defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs were automatically given the last pick of the first round. However, they surprised onlookers by trading up to 28th and nabbing the former Texas Longhorn, adding to a wideout corps that needed a reconstitution after "helping" the team lead the league in dropped passes in 2023.
"I remember talking to our coaching staff about Worthy, and they had done some tapework because they would bring in the guys for the interviews...," Veach said of the move. "We had a great interview; and I remember when he left, the coaches were like, 'What are we thinking? Is this guy gonna be around?'
"And then he ran a 4.21 (40 yd. dash), and I remember texting Coach Reid, (OC Matt Nagy), (passing game coordinator Joe Bleiermeyer), 'Take him off the board. He won't be there.'"
Worthy would sign his rookie contract over a month later - $13.79 million over four years with a fifth-year option, the entire amount guaranteed.
