Anthony Richardson injury: Colts QB gets "full go" for training camp amid shoulder recovery
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson's recovery is headed in the right direction as training camp inches closer. Colts' general manager Chris Ballard was a guest on The GM Shuffle podcast this week. He said that Richardson will be a full participant when camp kicks off next month.
Ballard said that Richardson has been participating with the Colts offense during offseason workouts including OTAs (Organized Team Activities). He added that the reason Richardson only participated in part of the second day of minicamp was due to a heavy throwing program he had done earlier in the week.
"He'll be full go. He was full go all the way up until the last day of OTAs, and we had two heavy throwing sessions the two days before, and so we backed off a little on the last day" - Colts GM Chris Ballard via The GM Shuffle podcast.
The rookie quarterback suffered an AC joint injury in his shoulder during Week 5 of the 2023 NFL season. The 22-year-old underwent season-ending shoulder surgery just days later.
Anthony Richardson said 'soreness' led to minicamp absence
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard said that the team held quarterback Richardson out on the final day of minicamp. This was in order to prevent him from overworking his repaired shoulder.
After the minicamp practice, Anthony Richardson said he was experiencing soreness in his shoulder. The quarterback said that while it's hard to heed the advice of the trainers, he knows he has to listen to ensure that he continues on the right path for his recovery.
“I’m good. Just a little soreness. I’ve been dealing with soreness since I started throwing – just my shoulder. It’s hard to listen to the trainers sometimes like, ‘You gotta sit out for a day.’ I don’t want to sit out, but it’s part of the health journey, so I’m just rocking with them and listening.”
Before suffering the season-ending shoulder injury, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback started four games after being drafted with the fourth overall pick in 2023. He threw for 577 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception. Richardson also rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns.
