"Are you kidding me?": Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dismisses suggestions of regret over Trey Lance trade
If Trey Lance harbored any thoughts of prying the backup QB job from Cooper Rush's hands, those thoughts will likely have to die a quick death after Week 3 of the NFL preseason.
The Cowboys wrapped up their preseason prep against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night but Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, made headlines for all the wrong reasons as he ended the night throwing five interceptions. The flip side of those numbers are that he threw for 323 yards on 67.3% passing and was also the Cowboys' leading rusher against Jim Harbaugh's Chargers but all in all, there was little to indicate that Lance would suit up for the Cowboys as the backup anytime in the near future if Dak Prescott were to go down with an injury.
One caveat is that things could have perhaps been a little less ugly had Lance played with the starting offensive line but the Cowboys were clearly being cautious given the state of their injury list with the regular season just under two weeks away.
After the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked if he had any regrets over taking a flier on the former San Francisco 49ers pick. Jones said:
"For a fourth-round pick? Are you kidding me? Although we did get Dak with our second fourth-round pick [in 2016]. But we've had some that didn't play in the fourth round too."
The Cowboys saw a buy-low opportunity last year after the Niners fully committed to having Brock Purdy as the starter. So far, though, Lance has failed to repay Jones' faith. As things stand, Lance will still be QB3 on the Cowboys depth chart behind Cooper Rush.
Dallas Cowboys dealt major blow on defense
There weren't too many takeaways from Dallas' 26-19 loss to the Chargers but one major headline to come out of Saturday was that star corner DaRon Bland will be out for nearly half the season with an injury.
The Cowboys announced that Bland had suffered a stress fracture in his foot. He is now set to undergo surgery and will miss a minimum of six weeks. Fifth-round pick Caelen Carson and ex-Vikings corner Andrew Booth will likely have to fill in for Bland, who racked up a total of 14 INTs from 2022 to 2023.
