Are Patriots benching Jacoby Brissett? Jerod Mayo sends strong message as Drake Maye waits for his shot
Jerod Mayo has cleared the air about Jacoby Brissett remaining as the starting quarterback of the New England Patriots. Mayo backtracked comments he made early on Monday that insinuated that Brissett could be benched after the Patriots' 30-13 loss to the 49ers on Sunday.
During his weekly press conference on Monday, Mayo told reporters that Brissett is their starter going forward, dismissing rumors that rookie quarterback Drake Maye is getting his chance.
"I'm not trying to send mixed messages. And when I said, 'the right to change my mind,' I'm actually talking about the entire team. Because the thing about it- I always reserve the right to make a change at any given time," Mayo told reporters.
"And so, you know- I don't want the fans or anyone to think like, what is he talking about? Jacoby's 100% our starter. He's 100% our starter. And that's how we're going to look at this going forward."
The New England Patriots have suffered three straight losses after getting a Week 1 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The 1-3 record puts them at the bottom of the AFC East.
What did Jerod Mayo say about Jacoby Brissett's status?
Jerod Mayo appeared on "The Greg Hill Show" on Monday. By mid-morning, Mayo was clearing up what he said after some took his words as a clue that Jacoby Brissett could be replaced as the starting quarterback.
The first-year head coach was asked if Brissett would remain the starting quarterback for the time being; he said he would. Mayo then said that he and his coaching staff reserve the right to make any roster changes throughout the season.
“When we say those things, like, ‘Alright, this guy is starting as of” — like, we always, always reserve the right to do something else, no matter what the position is, and that’s how I operate. I’m always going to do what’s best for the organization,” Mayo said.
The comments that he could change his mind at any time led some to believe that Jerod Mayo was hinting a change was coming.
The New England Patriots drafted quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick but decided to go with the veteran, Jacoby Brissett, to start the season. As the Patriots' struggles continue, calls for Maye have picked up.
