Bengals QB Joe Burrow admits to mental struggles after heartbreaking 26-25 loss vs Chiefs
Joe Burrow is coming off a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that was tough to take. The Cincinnati Bengals were leading 25-23 up until the final seconds of the game. Just then a defensive pass interference call was made against one of the Bengals' defenders.
The penalty brought the Chiefs in range for a field goal. Harrison Butker walked in, kicked the ball though the uprights just as the clock ran out, and secured an improbable victory for the Chiefs.
No one was more heartbroken than Joe Burrow. This was now his third consecutive 0-2 start to a season.
On Burrow's appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday, the host asked him if he mentally beat himself up after the game. And Burrow replied:
"Yeah of course. I'm always looking for where I can get an edge, where I can improve myself. You know, I expect to play close to perfect football, and when I don't, I'm pretty hard on myself and always looking for little areas to improve my game." (3:05 - 3:26)
He also added that he was his harshest critic.
"I'm definitely harder on myself than anybody else around me. I think that's how you want to play the game and how you want to handle yourself for constant improvement." (3:50 - 3:57)
Joe Burrow took out his frustration on his helmet post-Chiefs loss
After the game, a video started doing the rounds on social media. In it, Joe Burrow's face could be seen starting to light up as he saw that Daijahn Anthony had blocked the pass that Patrick Mahomes had made to Rashee Rice.
But his happiness was short-lived as a DPI call was made against Anthony. He shot his arms up in disappointment which then turned into rage. He pulled off his helmet and then slammed it on the ground.
However, Bengals fans shouldn't be hitting the panic button just yet. They have two relatively easy matchups in the next two weeks. On Monday Night Football, they'll be facing off against the 1-1 Washington Commanders.
And then on Sunday, they'll be up against the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers recently benched their second-year QB Bryce Young, but they are not expected to do much better under veteran QB Andy Dalton either.
