Bill Belichick comes down hard on Jerod Mayo's Patriots after dismal 3-10 start to season

In the 2024 offseason, the New England Patriots fired coach Bill Belichick, ending his 23-year run with the franchise. The eight-time Super Bowl champion couldn't find another coaching gig and is instead filling his time being an analyst on TV.

Unsurprisingly, Belichick has been intently observing the Patriots. And he hasn't been impressed with what he's seen. On the "Let's Go" podcast, he was asked about his former team, and in his infamous monotonous cadence, he ripped the team and gave a brutal assessment of their 3-10 season:

"Yeah, just haven't done enough to win very many games on any level. They’ve had trouble on defense. One of the last-ranked teams on offense, if not the bottom-ranked. Missed some key field goals and some kicking plays as well. So, I'd say all three areas of the game just haven't been good enough to win."

He added that Jerod Mayo should use the bye week to address the team's long list of issues and look to finish the year strong. However, he claimed he had little faith in the team's ability to end the year on a high note:

"They have a bye week this week, so maybe they can get a few things straightened out, but it's just been a pretty inconsistent year. Just haven't been able to do enough to win when they needed to."

Will Patriots fire Jerod Mayo?

Jerod Mayo's debut season as the Patriots' coach hasn't gone well. The team is 3-10 and hasn't looked good on offense, defense or special teams.

Some Patriots fans have already had enough of the rookie head coach and have demanded he be let go in the offseason. There are no reports about Mayo being on the hot seat or the Patriots' top brass looking at alternatives.

However, they reportedly sought outside counsel on how to develop a young quarterback to ensure they do not mess up rookie Drake Maye's progress, especially after the Mac Jones debacle.

Mayo denied the reports, claiming they were "false." However, he had no choice but to undermine the claim's credibility, as the team seeking outside help would suggest they do not have faith in their coach's ability to ensure Maye transitioned smoothly from promising rookie to franchise cornerstone.

It's been a pretty arduous debut season for Mayo, and there's a small chance it's the only one he gets.
