Bill Belichick's stance on rookie QB is the polar opposite of Jerod Mayo's Drake Maye plan
A new era has dawned in Foxborough after Bill Belichick recently parted ways with the Patriots after 24 years. Former New England Pro Bowler Jerod Mayo now wears the decorated franchise's head coaching cap. However, Belichick and Mayo have stark differences in how they train rookie quarterbacks.
For the first time in more than two decades, the New England Patriots are going through a different set of motions. Mayo’s plan for No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye has seen him log limited reps and little time with the starters. However, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach aired his disagreement with this approach.
On Monday, Belichick appeared on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show, highlighting his stance toward QB rookies. The iconic sideline leader drew upon his almost five decades of coaching experience in the NFL to make his point:
“Tom (Brady) always wanted to play in preseason”, said Belichick. “He always felt like, 'I want to get more work. I want to get the live speed of the game. I want to do that.' And then, I've been with other players that are kind of not that, they don't really want to do that as much, 'the tenlplays in the preseason game don't really do anything for me. I don't care about that.'”
“And I don't think there's a right or wrong on that. But I do think that, especially with the quarterback position, you would take that into consideration. You know, if the player really wanted to play and felt like he needed it for his timing, then I think you would probably find a way to do it.”
Belichick’s former player, Mayo, highlighted a similar concern. Both pointed out that Maye’s reps aren’t enough to prepare him for the grinding NFL season.

The 72-year-old Belichick has been on the sidelines of a football field for most of his adult life. Now, for the first time in decades, he doesn’t have a football team to lead. However, Belichick revealed on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ that he does sit in on the Washington Huskies’ training sessions.
"It's nice to, just get back and watch some action going on in the field. You know, being around Steve and Jedd. It's just fun to watch what's going on and sitting in some meetings and watch players work.”
Belichick’s son Stephen worked for him with the Patriots. However, after Bill Belichick departed from the NFL, his son Stephen began working under Huskies coach Jedd Fisch.
