Bill Belichick spills beans on post-Patriots life being at Washington Huskies' training camp
Bill Belichick spent mostly all his adult life coaching football from the sidelines and he seems to be missing it. While he has remained active in the football media circuit, it is not the same thing as being in the thick of things. He has now revealed on the Pat McAfee Show, how he gets his fix.
His son, Steve, has been hired as a defensive coordinator with the University of Washington as a new coaching staff looks to replicate last year's success of reaching the Championship game and tries to go one better. And by turning up to their training sessions to join his son and head coach Jedd Fisch, Bill Belichick is getting to be closer to the action.
The legendary coach also revealed that he has got to sit on some meetings, showing that there is a high degree of acceptance of his input in Washington. Bill Belichick said:
"It's nice to, just get back and watch some action going on in the field. You know, being around Steve and Jedd. It's just fun to watch what's going on and sitting in some meetings and watch players work."
Bill Belichick clarifies that he is not intruding in Washington's affairs
Bill Belichick hastened to add, though, that just because he is there and the pedigree he brings does not mean that Jedd Fisch is not in command. The new head coach has a tough act to follow Kalen DeBoer, who achieved tremendous success with the program last season.
The former Patriots coach said that he only looks at things that they flag to him and expressed his admiration for the whole effort, saying that he looks forward to following them during the season:
"Jedd's got the whistle. I'm just here to watch and, sometimes they ask me to look at something, or what I think about this without or whatever. Jedd does a great job with this program and look forward to following them during the year."
Jedd Fisch will be working with a completely new roster with 21 of the 22 players new to the team. That is a remarkable turnaround and yet he will be asked to achieve the same level of success as his predecessor did.
Those are high expectations and that is something Bill Belichick has had a lifetime contending with. Perhaps that is where the future Hall-of-Fame head coach might have his most significant impact by turning up at Washington practices.
