Bill Belichick vs Nick Saban: NFL analysts debate Patriots legend’s priorities in media career
Two legendary football coaches, Bill Belichick and Nick Saban, stepped away from coaching following their 2023 football seasons. Belichick and the New England Patriots mutually agreed to part ways after 20-plus seasons, and Saban retired after coaching Alabama for over 15 years.
Unsurprisingly, both Belichick and Saban have transitioned to the booth, becoming analysts of the game. Saban serves as an analyst for ESPN's "College GameDay," and Belichick will appear on a number of ESPN programs as well as the "Let's Go!" podcast.
While the masterminds of football have retired to analyze the game from the booth, each will have different duties in their roles. The Ringer's Bryan Curtis and SI Media's Jimmy Traina spoke about what Belichick and Saban have to gain with their broadcasting careers, with Curtis saying Belichick has more to gain since he wants to continue coaching.
Here is part of their conversation:
Curtis: “You just went through a whole cycle where you got told 'no' by the Falcons and the Commanders. You have a lot to gain here. You need to remind people that you’re a great coach and you were a great coach. And also convince people that you have a personality that can fit inside a building with a billionaire owner that’s more than the personality you showed or didn’t show with the Patriots. There’s a lot of upside for him here.”
Curtis: “I guess I’d go a little bit Saban. Belichick is kinda like Brady. It’s Belichick talking in an uncontrolled setting. I know he’s done a lot with McAfee, that’s fascinating, too."
Traina: “You do wonder if Belichick pulls back a little whereas Saban can let it all fly because he’s done with coaching."
Curtis: “That’s my take early. But with Belichick, anything he says will be big news, like Brady. It’s big aggregatable stuff.”
