Billionaire Jets owner Woody Johnson breaks silence on Aaron Rodgers' future in New York
The New York Jets are entering a new regime with Aaron Glenn as head coach and general manager Darren Mougey. However, the big question remains: Will they retain quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 season? This will be the biggest question mark for the Jets this offseason.
It isn't ideal for a team in a new regime to stick with a 41-year-old quarterback. Granted, Aaron Rodgers isn't just any 41-year-old quarterback, but he is past his prime.
On Monday, Jets owner Woody Johnson was asked about Rodgers' future in New York and said he would let new head coach Aaron Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey handle that task.
Johnson said:
"I'm gonna leave that to them," Johnson said. "They've gotta take a look at how the team's composed and what they think they need."
He was then asked if he would welcome back Rodgers if the head coach and general manager decided to retain him. He also said he wouldn't voice his opinion on whether he wants Rodgers to return.
"If they want him back, Aaron's talented, for sure, he's a Hall of Famer."
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn comments on bringing back Aaron Rodgers for this season
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn was asked on Monday, Jan. 25, about how he will deal with Aaron Rodgers before the start of the season while speaking to the local media.
Glenn bluntly stated that they've already reached out to Rodgers and will evaluate everything and every position this offseason.
Glenn said:
"We've already texted Aaron. We're going to sit there and watch every game tape there is. And then we're gonna look at the whole roster. This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers folks. This is about the roster. And we plan on building the best roster that we can."
Rodgers has been with the Jets the last two seasons and didn't play in 2023 due to an Achilles tear before the 2022 season. Last season, he played all 17 games, finishing with a 5-12 while completing 63 percent of passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Glenn and his staff's first big decision will be to determine whether Rodgers is their plan at quarterback. If not, they will need to find his replacement quickly, as the offseason is almost here.
