Bills lacked 'standard’ in grueling loss against Bears, states HC Sean McDermott
The Buffalo Bills didn't play as well as they could have in their preseason opener against Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears over the weekend. Sean McDermott expressed disappointment in his team following a grueling 33-6 loss they endured.
Preseason wins and losses don't matter since there's a revolving door of players who likely won't play in the regular season. The performance level does, however, and it was not up to the standard McDermott has for his team.
“Our standard was not out there today. That’s not how we play, so there is a lot we need to do to get ourselves ready to go here," McDermott said via NBC Sports. "But we’ve got to learn from it. We have to be truthful about what we saw out there.
"Self-inflicted wounds are hard to overcome, and then you’ve got to play an opponent on the other side. So, give them credit. They played well.”
The Bills were outgained by 140 yards, gave up eight sacks, and committed 11 penalties. It was an ugly showing for a team with Super Bowl aspirations this year.
Sean McDermott hopeful Bills can learn from loss
The Buffalo Bills were demolished to open the NFL preseason. It was a dismal outing, but head coach Sean McDermott believes there's something to be gained even from this loss.
In a statement via the team's website, he discussed what they can take from the loss to the Chicago Bears:
"There is a lot we can learn from, and I'm confident we'll do that. I'm also happy to see a lot of guys, the goal was to at least get everyone in in some capacity, so I'm happy for those players who have never played before in an NFL game, that they got in and were able to get out there and get some work."
Caleb Williams led two field goal drives on the Bills in his first action. The Bills will play against the Pittsburgh Steelers again next week.
