Brandon Aiyuk trade saga set for another plot twist as WR inches closer to choosing next team: Report
Brandon Aiyuk and his trade possibilities have overtaken the conversation leading into the 2024 NFL season. The wide receiver’s contract negations, trade request, and potential destinations have all been widely debated. However, the saga might end with a possible plot twist.
The San Francisco 49ers and Aiyuk failed to reach an agreement on an extension of his rookie deal. The Niners then accepted his trade request and amidst multiple landing options, the Pittsburgh Steelers became the favorites for the wide receiver to join. The latest report suggests that Aiyuk is considering resigning with the Niners.
The NFL Network’s insider Mike Garafolo thinks that Brandon Aiyuk has always wanted to stay with the Niners. The main reason for not signing a new contract was a disagreement on the final salary. Garafalo reports that number is getting closer to both sides’ likeness.
“What I’ve been told is that Brandon Aiyuk would prefer to stay with the 49ers, and has always preferred to stay with the 49ers, all things being equal,” Garafolo said. “Now, they haven’t been equal, but they did make that offer. In fact, both sides sent proposals within the last, I don’t know, couple days, week or so, and the 49ers’ number has gotten better than what it was previously.”
In a scenario where both the Steelers and the 49ers are willing to pay a similar salary to Aiyuk, the wide receiver would prefer to stay. However, as has been the case in these negotiations, another option could also be waiting for the fans of both teams.
Brandon Aiyuk is one call away from the 49ers
As per ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, it's up to the Niners to decide whether Aiyuk resigns or not. The team believes they can retain their star receiver, despite the Steelers, or other potential destinations, waiting in the wings.
“Steelers remain motivated on a Brandon Aiyuk deal, but trade talks with 49ers were quiet in recent days as S.F. decides whether to extend the WR at a price point he would accept. As one source pointed out, the team is ‘one phone call away’ on deal, with parameters in place.”
As it has been pointed out by the NFL insiders, money can swing the balance in favor of any team. However, at this point, it is not yet clear if the Niners are likely to sign an extension with Aiyuk, or if he'll be traded.
