Brock Purdy’s ex-teammate Breece Hall reveals he was surprised at 49ers QB's rise in the NFL
Brock Purdy’s rise in the NFL has been meteoric, to say the least. However, his former Iowa State teammate, who has been with him from the early days, finds the level of success Purdy achieved surprising.
Both Purdy and Breece Hall were in the draft class of 2022. While the New York Jets picked the running back Hall in the second round, the San Francisco 49ers made Purdy the last pick of the draft. The QB was labeled ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ as per tradition, but he broke away from the shackles of the tag soon enough.
Multiple injuries within the team in his rookie season made Brock Purdy lead the Niners and he was declared team’s No. 1 choice at the beginning of the last season.
Purdy fulfilled his promises and took the team to the Super Bowl. Appearing on ‘The Pivot’ podcast, Breece Hall recounted their journey.
“Us being at a small school, we didn't get the most talented people,” said Hall on the podcast. “So, we kind of had to do a little bit more with less. Which worked out in our favor sometimes, where sometimes it didn't.”
This mentality for both Iowa State standouts would lead them to success. Especially, for Brock Purdy, which surprised a lot of people. Hall said:
“But I always knew he had it in him to be a be a great player but this, what he doing now is like a complete surprise. But he always even told me he was like, ‘Bro as long as I got the pieces around me, I'm gonna be successful.’” (36:45 – 37:05)
Purdy eventually did get the right pieces around him with the Niners, leading to an unprecedented level of success for a ‘Mr. Irrelevant’.
Brock Purdy’s last chance for a Super Bowl?
Even though this season would be only his third, a former 49ers icon argues this could be Purdy's last chance to lift the Lombardi Trophy with his current team. Former LB Patrick Willis stated his prediction on the ‘Kay Adams Show’.
"I thought last year was that final season for all of them to really be together,” said Willis. But obviously, as things have played out as of now, it kind of looks like this could be the last go around. So, I’m really hoping they can get it done this year for everyone."
Only time will tell whether this is the last dance for Purdy and Co. in the Super Bowl.
