Broncos vs Jets box score, stats and summary feat. Jets' stale offense and Bo Nix's learning lessons
The New York Jets have been quietly impressive through three weeks of football despite being tested by both the San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans. Sure, they were a little rusty in Week 1 but that was expected. In any case, this week’s Broncos-Jets matchup was a much-awaited one, not only because the Jets are finding their feet but because of Rodgers’ history with Sean Payton.
Last year, Rodgers ripped Payton for throwing Nathaniel Hackett under the bus. The four-time NFL MVP told the Broncos head coach to keep his coach’s name out of his mouth.
The game didn't get off to the hottest start. The Broncos and Jets combined for a total of negative four yards on their first four drives. Neither team had a first down in the opening quarter. The first first down was seven possessions in. Yeah, not great. New York and Denver failed to entertain in the first half, settling for an 0-6 scoreline in the Jets' favor thanks to Greg Zuerlein.
Broncos vs Jets box score and stats
We expected a lot out of this Jets offense this afternoon but we just didn't see any initiative. Aaron Rodgers attempted his wizardry to pull the game through and the Jets were handed a reprieve after Will Lutz's missed kick with a minute and a half to go. The Jets needed about 30 yards for Zuerlein to push for a win late in the fourth. The Jets pushed and pushed but alas, they were forced into a field-goal attempt with 51 seconds to go. Zuerlein lined up from 50 yards away and it was no good, handing the Broncos a 10-9 win.
The loss to the Broncos will sting, especially considering how Rodgers lashed out against Sean Payton last year, but if we're being honest, there just wasn't any offensive potential on show this afternoon for either team to be proud of. The clear winners from this meeting were the Broncos and the Jets will now have to pick up the pieces at 2-2 and face the Vikings, Bills and Steelers next - all mean pass defenses.
