Buffalo Bills GM lays gameplan for facing Drake Maye and Patriots in two of final three games

The New England Patriots drafted quarterback Drake Maye with the third pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Patriots' AFC East foes Buffalo Bills are already planning to face Maye and New England this season.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane is already planning for his team to face Maye in Weeks 16 and 18. Beane was a guest on the "Green Light with Chris Long" podcast this week and said that his team will be keeping an eye on Maye and the Patriots' starting quarterback situation:

"Week 2 starts to tell you, 'Okay, this week are we going to try the rookie, are we got to stay with Jacoby, in this case.' So I think that kind of starts to tell and you watch the play or look at the weapons that he's playing with first, the weapons that the starter's playing with? How are they moving? The offense?
"Does it look like there's confidence or not? And I think if you're like, 'This kid's playing confident,' they're probably seeing that too."

He continued:

"I think we can all kind of see it, feel it, whether you're there or you're watching it on tape. So I think we'll be paying a lot of attention to that. And again, a lot can change from Week 1. Even if he's not the starter Week 1, by the end of the season a lot can change."

While Brandon Beane doesn't necessarily know when Drake Maye will make his NFL debut, he seemed quite confident that the 21-year-old would be named the starter by Week 16.

Mike Florio believes Jacoby Brissett will get Week 1 start over Drake Maye

The New England Patriots may have drafted quarterback Drake Maye with the third pick but veteran Jacoby Brissett is also an option to start Week 1. Brissett signed a one-year deal in March to return to the team that drafted him in 2016.

While Maye is seen as the future of the team, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio said this week that Brissett has an opportunity to start Week 1. Florio believes that the matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals favors Brissett rather than Maye starting.

Mike Florio: "I don't think we're going to see Drake Maye on day one. And especially now that I see the games at Cincinnati, I think we get Jacoby Brissett."

Paycor Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals has been a hostile environment for visiting teams. Perhaps the New England Patriots will decide to wait until Week 2 with a home matchup against the Seattle Seahawks to debut their rookie quarterback?
