Cam Newton endorses Colorado sensation for 2024 Heisman Trophy (and it's not Shedeur Sanders)
Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton knows a thing or two about being a Heisman-winning player. He took home the 2010 Heisman Trophy after a historic season at Auburn.
After Week 5 of the 2024 NCAAF season, a few names have emerged as Heisman candidates. Players such as Travis Hunter, Ashton Jeanty, Jalen Milroe, and Cam Ward are a few Heisman candidates early this season.
Speaking on his podcast, 4thand1show, Newton was asked if he had Colorado's Hunter winning the Heisman right now. Newtown said:
"Yes, Travis Hunter is the first player to take hold of college football since Johnny Manziel. Johnny Manziel in college was must-see TV, whether off the field issues, whether the motherfucker was going ball. The thing that I'm so pleased about Travis is, he has not got into any trouble. He's a good kid, so everything that he has coming to him, he deserves."
Hunter is one of the most versatile players in college football history. He's one of the few players to play on both sides of the field as he is one of Colorado's starting wide receivers and cornerbacks. Hunter plays most of the game as he averages 130 snaps per game.
Hunter has 46 catches for 561 yards and six touchdowns on the season, ranking second in the Big 12 in yards. He's a lockdown corner on defense with 16 tackles and two interceptions on the season.
Deion Sanders lobbies for Travis Hunter to be the first pick of the 2025 NFL draft
Whether or not he wins the Heisman this year, Travis Hunter will be a top pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Aside from his versatility, Hunter is one of the best players in college football at both positions.
Speaking on Undisputed earlier this year, Deion Sanders said Hunter could be the first-overall pick in next year's draft.
Sanders said via Undisputed:
"This kid is a first-rounder on both sides of the ball, like a first pick. He is the first pick. That’s who he is. Travis is, and he loves the game. He does not tire of loving the game and wanting to be in the game and studying the game and all of the intricate details of the game.”
It will be interesting to see if Hunter plays wide receiver or cornerback. As of right now, the Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock. Could Hunter be a future Jag?
