Cam Newton launches furious defence of Dak Prescott: “I prefer Dak over Kirk Cousins, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts”
Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott is expected to be the next quarterback to sign a lucrative contract. Whether the Cowboys make that happen or he decides to move on after the 2024 NFL season remains to be seen.
In the meantime, Prescott has gained the support of former NFL quarterback Cam Newton. On the most recent episode of the 4th and 1 Show, he spoke about Prescott's talent as a quarterback.
“If you’ve got the same statline as Patrick Mahomes, something is clicking in big games. I’m looking at this list. The top 10 [highest-paid] goes as follows [Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson, Kirk Cousins, Patrick Mahomes].
"It’s only one guy that has a Super Bowl and it’s a lot of guys that don’t have a lot of playoff success. If you’re gonna judge Dak Prescott on playoff success and I’m looking at a list of guys that don’t have any playoff experience or a playoff win…
He continued by saying that he would take Prescott over some of the other big names in the league:
“I would prefer Dak over Kirk Cousins, I prefer Dak over Kyler Murray. I prefer Dak over Jalen Hurts. Justin Herbert? Dak. Trevor Lawrence? I’m taking Dak.
Cam Newton went even further and stated his belief that Prescott is better than most of the quarterbacks who have made much more money than him:
“Dak is better than half the guys on this list.”
Where does Dak Prescott's current contract rank him?
In 2021, the Dallas Cowboys signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year extension worth $160 million. That contract extension led to the quarterback making around $40 million a season. He is now headed into the final season of his current contract and is likely to be the next quarterback to see a big payday.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were the latest NFL team to offer their quarterback a lucrative extension. Trevor Lawrence signed a five-year deal worth a whopping $275 million.
When the contract kicks in next season, he will be tied with Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow at an annual salary of $55 million as the top-paid NFL player at their position.
Prescott currently ranks 12th on the list of NFL quarterbacks with the highest yearly salary. This ties him with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford who also makes $40 million a season.
