Cam Newton warns David Tepper over repercussions of demanding $650,000,000 for Panthers' stadium upgrades

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has reportedly asked the Charlotte City Council for $650 million as he prepares to renovate the Bank of America Stadium. Tepper is looking forward to significant upgrades to the stadium, which is also the home of MLS franchise Charlotte FC.

Former Panther quarterback Cam Newton recently offered his opinion on Tepper's funding request and cautioned the owner about the reality that currently he is not on the same page with the residents of the city. On the 4thand1show, Newton said:

"Ain't none of this sh*t gonna be worth a f**k if you got the chairman, the president or the CEO or the person who's making the calls, isn't at one with the city...
"I don't care how much money you got. I don't care how much money you asking for. But if you're not at one, the number one in charge, is not at one with the city, it's not gonna work. It's not, so take it for what it's worth."

Although Cam Newton did make a valid point, there is a possibility that if Tepper doesn't get the funds for the stadium from the city council, he might look to relocate the team, which will be a huge blow to the city of Charlotte.

David Tepper bought the Carolina Panthers for $2.3 billion in 2018 and since then the franchise hasn't performed well. In six seasons under Tepper's ownership, the Panthers record has been this:

  • 2018: 7-9
  • 2019: 5-11
  • 2020: 5-11
  • 2021: 5-12
  • 2022: 7-10
  • 2023: 2-15

Panthers fans have problems with Tepper due to the team's poor performance over the years and the fact that the owner has intervened in various major team decisions. The most prominent one was drafting Bryce Young last year, as head coach Frank Reich and general manager Scott Fitterer reportedly wanted to get C.J. Stroud instead.

David Tepper wants the best for the team; however, some of his decisions have backfired. The upcoming season is critical for him and the team, as they have a new head coach, Dave Canales, whose main goal is to get the best out of Bryce Young.

Few were surprised by the former Alabama quarterback's poor output in his rookie season. However, the franchise has invested a lot in the offense this offseason and expects Young to take a leap.

They got Diontae Johnston from the Pittsburgh Steelers and also drafted Xavier Legette, both of whom can make life easy for the quarterback. Furthermore, the franchise improved the offensive line, and if the team performs well this upcoming season then the owner could easily get the required money from the city council.
