Can Patrick Mahomes surpass Tom Brady’s epic legacy? Troy Aikman picks sides after Chiefs’ Super Bowl win
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming off of his second Super Bowl victory and second league MVP season.
He's quickly climbing the ladder on the all-time greatness list at the age of 27 after his most recent Super Bowl victory.
Jennifer Piacenti, who works for Sports Illustrated, asked Aikman if he thought Mahomes had a chance to catch up to Brady's GOAT status.
Aikman responded by saying that in order to do what Brady's done, you have to play at a really high level for a long time, which Mahomes has been doing, but wouldn't bet on anyone surpassing Brady's numbers.
Aikman said:
"In order to do what Tom's been able to do, whether you look at wins, or yards, or touchdowns, or Super Bowls, it means you have to play one, a long time and then you have to play at a really high level for the entire time, and that's what he's done. That's what Emmitt Smith did. Those things I really respect, but you know, he's [Mahomes] has had a great start.
"Patrick Mahomes to his career he has won two Super Bowls at the end of the day and the championships are really all anyone is being paid for, especially quarterbacks. It's why these owners pays what they pay it is to go win a championship, and he's been able to do that. He's been a league MVP. Anything is possible, but I would never bet on anyone passing any of his [Brady's] numbers that he was able to acquire."
Comparing Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady's careers up until the age of 27
If there's a quarterback to catch up to Brady's greatness, it could be Mahomes.
As of right now, Mahomes has 24,241 YDS, 192 TD, and 49 INT at the age of 27. He's also won two league MVPs, two Super Bowls and five Pro Bowls.
Brady's stats at the age of 27 were 8,035 YDS, 123 TD and 66 INT.
Brady also won three Super Bowls and two MVPs in his 20s.
It's hard to tell whether or not Patrick Mahomes will catch up with Tom Brady due to how long Brady played for and not knowing how long Mahomes will continue playing for.
Both quarterbacks are great and are two generational talents the league has seen.
