CeeDee Lamb holdout incoming? Cowboys WR tipped to steer clear of training camp with no new deal on the table
CeeDee Lamb is coming off his best season in his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys. He led the NFL in receptions last season on his way to being selected as a first-team All-Pro. He also increased his output in just about every receiving category, as he has done every year of his career.
Following his incredible campaign, Lamb has been seeking a contract extension ahead of the 2024 NFL season. He is entering the final year of his current deal, and like many players in this situation, he reportedly wants an extension prior to the start of the new season.
This situation creates a major issue for the Cowboys, who are scheduled to officially open their training camp on Thursday. According to Brandon Loree, Lamb is not expected to report to camp until he gets the new contract he is seeking. He adds that team officials aren't expecting the superstar wide receiver to show up without a new deal.
What complicates this situation even further is that CeeDee Lamb is not the only Cowboys superstar reportedly seeking a new contract. Dak Prescott is reportedly seeking an extension of his own and reportedly desires to be the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. With Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence making $55 million in AAV, Prescott's potential deal could be massive.
Unlike Lamb, Prescott is reportedly planning on attending training camp, even without a new deal first, but his stance could potentially change if he doesn't get an extension before Week 1.
This means that the Cowboys have some important decisions to make, especially with the way the wide receiver market has exploded.
CeeDee Lamb could join other WRs getting massive contracts in 2024
In the 2024 NFL offseason alone, Justin Jefferson, AJ Brown, and Amon-Ra St. Brown became the three highest-paid wide receivers in NFL history. Jefferson currently leads the way with $35 million in AAV, the most ever by any non-quarterback in NFL history.
Tyreek Hill rounds out the current list of four wide receivers making at least $30 million in AAV, but many around the NFL expect CeeDee Lamb to join them.
It's unclear at this point just how much Lamb is asking for from the Dallas Cowboys and if he's looking to surpass Jefferson. That may be answered in the near future, as he will reportedly skip training camp until it is.
