Chiefs fans predict 'petty' Patrick Mahomes return as NFL Top 100 list snubs star QB: "They woke the beast"

The NFL Top 100 players list, voted on by the players, was fully unveiled yesterday and to the surprise of many, Patrick Mahomes was ranked as the fourth-best player in it.

Players voted Christian McCaffrey (#3), Lamar Jackson (#2), and Tyreek Hill (#1) ahead of Mahomes. This comes after Mahomes led the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl victory within the last five years and their second Super Bowl win in a row.

Fans on social media were in disbelief learning that Mahomes was ranked as the fourth-best player in the NFL. Some think it's going to motivate him to play better this season while others warned that it may give some added motivation to one of the most dangerous players in the NFL.

Here's how fans reacted:

"The league just gifted us Petty Mahomes," one fan said.
"At some point people will learn to stop throwing jet fuel on his fire, right?" one person questioned.
"He's gonna count to 4 on national television again then pretend afterwards it meant nothing and I'm totally here for it," one fan wrote.

Other fans were vocal about their opinions on the overall list, stating that it was a horrible list or not a serious one. Fans couldn't believe that three other players were listed above Mahomes.

This year's list saw the first time a wide receiver was named the number-one overall player as Hill got the title. Jackson, who won this past season's MVP, came in at second, and McCaffrey, who led the league in rushing yards, came in at three.

Here's how other fans reacted:

"This is terrible. He should be #1," one fan wrote.
"This should tell everyone how unserious this annual list is," a fan said.
"This has to be a misprint. There’s no way this is real. Mahomes is undisputed number one," one fan wrote.

While Patrick Mahomes didn't come out as the top player heading into this season, he's earned that crown twice. Mahomes was named the best player for the first time, by the players, heading into the 2021 season, and then got it again last year, heading into the 2023 season.

You can argue the case for Mahomes being the number one player in the NFL and you can argue against it. Mahomes was named a Pro Bowler, led the Kansas City Chiefs to a second-straight Super Bowl, and was named Super Bowl MVP a second-straight year.

He had good stats, but not his best, throwing for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns, 14 interceptions while completing a career-high 67.2 percent of passes.

Mahomes is yet to publicly comment about his ranking, but it's likely that he will keep bulletin-board material as additional motivation for the season.
