Chiefs make $5,300,000 move in wake of DeAndre Hopkins trade
Earlier this week, the Kansas City Chiefs made a big move by acquiring wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs sent the Titans a fifth-round pick in return.
Following the move, the Chiefs made another move on their roster, altering the contract of left tackle, Jawaan Taylor. Taylor had signed a four-year, $80 million contract with the Chiefs in March of 2023.
ESPN NFL reporter Field Yates tweeted that the Chiefs created $5.3 million in cap space for this season by converting some of Taylor's contract into a signing bonus.
Yates Tweeted:
"With cap space tight after the DeAndre Hopkins trade, the Chiefs restructured the contract of OT Jawaan Taylor by converting salary into a signing bonus, creating $5.3M in 2024 room."
Taylor was already under contract for the remainder of this season and the next two years.
With his contract altered, the conversion should add half of that $5.3 million ($2.65 million) to his cap number for each of the next two seasons. Taylor was already set to make $19.5 million in base salary for the next two seasons.
DeAndre Hopkins says he hasn't played "meaningful" football in years
It seems like DeAndre hopkins threw some shade at the Tennessee Titans after being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
During Hopkins' press conference with the Chiefs media on Thursday, Hopkins spoke about the opportunity he has to play for the Chiefs while saying that he hasn't played meaningful football in years.
Hopkins said:
"It takes your game to a different level. It takes your focus, your drive, knowing that you're playing for something. It takes your game to a different level.
"I haven't played meaningful football in a couple years, since probably when we started 8-0 in Arizona. It takes your game to a different level."
Can you blame him? The Titans are currently 1-5 and are in last place in the AFC South division. He joins the only undefeated team in the NFL, as the Chiefs boast a 6-0 record and are on a quest for a three-peat.
DeAndre Hopkins comes over to the Chiefs with 15 catches for 173 yards and a touchdown this season.
He will likely be Patrick Mahomes' WR1 for much of the remainder of the regular season while the team is thin at wide receiver corps due to injuries.
