Christian McCaffrey injury update: NFL insider drops "positive" news on 49ers RB's return timeline
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey could make his 2024 debut the next time the 49ers step on the field. McCaffrey dealt with an Achilles and calf injury in the preseason that kept him inactive for all the 49ers' preseason games. McCaffrey missed the team's season opener and then was placed on injured reserve in Week 2.
The 49ers are on a bye week but return the following week, facing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter was on the Pat McAfee Show this morning and said that McCaffrey hasn't suffered any setbacks during his recovery and is expected to play against the Buccaneers.
"We have some positive Christian McCaffrey news ... So far has has not had any setbacks during his recovery .. Right now he's poised to get back after their bye and play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," Schefter said.
McCaffrey's return will be a significant boost to the 49ers' offense. Last season, McCaffrey led the league in rushing yards (1,459) and scored 14 rushing touchdowns. In addition, he made 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven touchdowns.
The San Francisco 49ers run game has done a decent job in Christian McCaffrey's absence
Christian McCaffrey is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. His numbers and playmaking abilities speak for themselves.
While the 49ers have missed McCaffrey's production on the field, their backup running backs, Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo, have been solid in the backfield.
Mason has 685 rushing yards while averaging 5.1 yards per carry and has scored three touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, Guerendo has 227 rushing yards, averages 6.1 yards per carry and has a rushing touchdown.
Quarterback Brock Purdy is the third leading rusher on the team with 240 yards and is tied for first in rushing touchdowns with Mason with three.
As a team, the 49ers have 248 carries for 1,272 yards and 10 touchdowns through eight games. They average 5.1 yards per carry.
With Christian McCaffrey expected to return, the 49ers offense should get even better.
