Sean Payton to the Rams? Colin Cowherd outlines why HC would be perfect replacement for Sean McVay
Could Sean Payton join the Los Angeles Rams as their next head coach during the 2023 season?
Payton is rumored to be getting back this season as the team's new head coach. There have been reports that current Rams head coach Sean McVay could step away from the team as head coach.
Analyst and TV show host Colin Cowherd stated on The Herd with Colin Cowherd that Payton could replace McVay if the latter retires.
"I think it's the perfect fit for Sean Payton. There's four reasons why I think it's the perfect fit. I know Sean a little bit. Rams have Stan Kroenke, richest owner in the league, doesn't meddle, very aggressive. Number two, Les Snead, the general manager. Southern, easy to get along with, like Sean Payton - hyper aggressive. Number three, Matt Stafford. When's the last time Sean Payton had a quarterback that could air it out downfield? And number four is Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady may not be in the NFC much longer. This feels perfect."
Cowherd added that the team should trade All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey in return for a first-round pick to send to the New Orleans Saints for Payton.
"Trade Jalen Ramsey because if you sign Sean Payton you have to give the Saints a first-round pick. Trade Jalen Ramsey, get a first and a fourth. Give up the first to the Saints... Jalen Ramsey isn't winning you Super Bowls. You got to get the old line right. You got to get the weapons right. You gotta get the left tackle right and if you trade Jalen Ramsey and get a first and a fourth, then the Rams would have second, third, a fourth, two-fifths, four-sixths, a seventh. They'll have 11 picks."
He concluded by saying that if McVay leaves, then the guy to replace him is Payton.
"If McVay leaves, come on, bro, you got to bring a big resume in the back room. You got to bring in a Super Bowl trophy. You got to bring in a personality. You got to bring in a big brain. That's a brain power. That's personality. That's presence. Sean McVay is hard to replace... McVay walks out, Peyton walks in. It works."
Is Sean McVay's resume worthy of making the Pro Football Hall of Fame if he retires?
Sean McVay has been a head coach in the NFL for a total of six seasons as he became the Los Angeles Rams head coach in 2017.
He has a career record of 60 wins with 38 losses and a post-season record of seven wins and three losses. He's made the playoffs in four out of six seasons as head coach while winning the NFC West three times.
McVay was named the AP Coach of the Year in 2017 and led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2021. If he retires, he could argue a case at being named a Hall of Famer but his longevity may get in the way.
