Colin Cowherd skewers Cowboys GM Jerry Jones' ignorance, draws parallels with Lakers - "They're a flawed football operation"
The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most popular sports teams, not just in the National Football League (NFL) but across the globe. Jerry Jones runs the $9 billion franchise, which he bought in February 1989. The Cowboys have not quite lived upto their standards in recent years, from 1995 to be precise.
Colin Cowherd believes the onus for the team's consistent failures is on Jerry Jones. When asked if the Cowboys will get past their curse, on the "Game with Names" podcast by Julian Edelman, Cowherd had a loud laugh. He went on to criticize Jones' "insular" approach of managing the team. [From 1:21:29]
"I think they're a flawed football operation," Cowherd said. "Too beholden their own picks. Too insular, not enough exterior voices. Not willing to hire a coach that pushes back on Jerry. I just think they're a flawed business operation."
Cowherd continued, explaining how the Dallas Cowboys are very similar to the Los Angeles Lakers, who are a huge brand but also have a lot of internal flaws.
"It's like the Lakers. They rely on Kobe's agent [Rob Pelinka] runs the franchise. Former players in the building. Big brand but kind of flawed operationally. I'm a big believer in hiring outside voices for a business to test you and challenge you and question you and Dallas doesn't do that. You have to bring in people outside the building."
Cowherd added that Bill Belichick's downfall with the New England Patriots began when he went back and hired Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, who were well known to him.
Colin Cowherd believes the Cowboys cannot win with Dak Prescott as their QB
The Dallas Cowboys are coming off their third consecutive 12-5 season. Their quarterback Dak Prescott, who is entering the final year of his four-year $160 million contract, is coming off an MVP-esque season. He threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions with a passer rating of 105.9, last year.
Speaking on the same podcast, Colin Cowherd believes that the Cowboys will not make the playoffs this season because the team will become too much reliant on Dak Prescott. He said that it was time for the Cowboys to move off Prescott because they can't afford to pay him great money and expect a Super Bowl.
[From 1:00:50 mark onwards]
"I argue it's about time to move off Dak. Dak's good. You can't pay him great. One thing we know doesn't work in this league - to have a good quarterback [that] you pay great."
"You can win with a rookie quarterback in a rookie deal. You can win with a great quarterback taking a bit of a pay cut. You can't be a B+ quarterback and get paid A+ you're out of the Super Bowl bubble."
Dak Prescott is reportedly seeking a $60 million contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones hasn't moved the needle for agreeing on a long-term deal with the 3x Pro Bowler. As things stand right now, all signs point to Prescott hitting the open market in 2025.
